The S&P 500 is in its most perilous position since late last summer, cautioned David Keller, the chief market strategist at StockCharts.com. After an uptick in volatility in March 2023, the S&P 500 enjoyed a virtually uninterrupted rally before peaking on the final day of July. Related storiesIn the meantime, investors should keep a close eye on two key technical support levels for the S&P 500, Keller said: 5,050 and 4,820. Utilities are one of only two parts of the market that's up in the last month, due to its risk-off nature. The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) is another compelling way to ride that rally, Keller said.

With this view in mind, I am looking for a bearish setup in the VanEck Oil Services ETF (OIH) . This ETF seeks to track the largest, most liquid companies involved in oil drilling and selling oil equipment based on market capitalization. However, my trading platform indicates that this will tie up $5,500 of portfolio margin, a significant amount for a potential profit of just $430. Yet, since I'm paying a debit for the $365 call, it also decreases my profit potential from $430 to $133. I will need a good trade management plan with a stop loss in case the trade starts going against me.

Many ETFs and stocks have been rallying over the last four months, and some have been making new all-time highs. The OIH Oil Services ETF is not one of them. Crude oil All energy-related stocks and ETFs are beholden to crude, which has been struggling since topping out in June 2022. Crude oil recently bounced from its lows and is trying, once again, to leverage a potential bullish chart formation. This chart shows exactly how well the ETF has adhered to this multiyear upward sloping trading channel.

A bearish head-and-shoulders pattern has formed in the S&P 500, Keller said in a recent interview with Insider. The S&P 500 is in a head-and-shoulders pattern and could soon fall to around 4,100. His early August warning that stocks will slide was correct, though the S&P 500 didn't give up as much of its summer rally as the chart guru predicted. Outside of technology, Keller likes stocks in the utilities and energy sectors — specifically those in the oilfield services industry. The recent rebound of utilities, a defensive stalwart, is another signal that more market downside is likely ahead, Keller said.

A pool of energy service stocks are likely to rally through year-end thanks to fatter profit margins leading to quarter-over-quarter earnings growth and higher price-to-earnings multiples, Goldman Sachs analysts said in a Tuesday note to clients. Everyone here is amazed at how forgotten segments of the market have rebounded in 2023: international, growth, small cap and bonds. Advisors here are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that there would be a recession ins 2023, and now maybe not. "With real wage growth, large payroll growth and earnings beating expectations it equals a soft landing at worst and maybe no recession near term." Most advisors here are coming to grips with Powell's insistence the Fed will not lower rates this year. Their Equal Weight S & P 500 ETF (RSP) has also attracted significant inflows from investors wary of market cap weighted indexes.

In many cases, the energy funds didn't even need leverage to outperform, with plain vanilla sector funds seeing massive gains. The iShares MSCI Turkey ETF has surged in the second half of the year and has a total return of more than 100%. Even with the Turkey outlier, the list overall is still dominated by oil and gas funds, with the VanEck Oil Services ETF (OIH) generating a total return of 65%. The Advocate Rising Rate Hedge ETF (RRH) and FolioBeyond Rising Rates ETF (RISR) also did their job in buoying investors portfolios. On the inflows side, broad market funds from Vanguard and iShares were the big winners, as those two brands continued to dominate the ETF market.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 4.9% in November, outperforming the other major averages. MKM chief market technician JC O'Hara said in a note to clients on Sunday that "old school leadership" is here to stay. "If this old index can continue to push higher and deeper into overbought territory, that will help break the S & P 500 out." One way for investors to play this trend is ETFs of old-school stocks, including the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA) . The fund tracks the 30 stocks in the Dow Average, with an expense ratio of 0.16%, or $1.60 for every $1,000 invested.

In the exchange-traded fund space, the VanEck Oil Services ETF (OIH) has risen 36% this year. But the global energy sector remains unstable, fueled by a precarious position in Europe. "Arguably, natural gas ends up being the new oil, right?" "These so-called dirty energy sources really are unpalatable," she said, referring to coal and nuclear energy substitutes. "We've seen a shift back to some of those less desired energy sources," Boal said.
